Management Biographies
WILLIAM H. BROOKS
PRESIDENT, ALUMINUM
William H. Brooks was appointed to the position of President, Noranda Aluminum, Inc., in September 1998. Prior to this, Mr. Brooks was the President of Norandal USA, Inc.
Mr. Brooks has been with Falconbridge since June 10, 1985. Over 20 years with the Company, he has held various managerial positions, including President, Norandal USA; President, Noranda Aluminum Primary Division; and Plant Manager at Norandal Huntingdon, Tennessee. Prior to joining Noranda, he worked eight years for Consolidated Aluminum, Inc., a subsidiary of Alusuisse. He was also Vice-President and Controller, Bauer Corp.
He holds a Masters in Business Administration degree from the University of Tennessee, along with a Bachelor of Science degree from Cleveland State University. Mr. Brooks is also a certified public accountant in Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia.
STEVE DOUGLAS
EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT AND CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
Steve Douglas was appointed Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer in November 2003. Prior to joining Falconbridge, he was Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of real estate company Brookfield Properties Corporation, a position that he held for more than six years. He also held various senior management positions at Brookfield for three years prior to being appointed Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Brookfield, Mr. Douglas was affiliated with Ernst & Young in Toronto.
Mr. Douglas is a chartered accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario.
CLAUDE FERRON
PRESIDENT, CANADIAN COPPER AND RECYCLING
Claude Ferron was appointed President, Canadian Copper and Recycling, in August 2004.
Mr. Ferron is responsible for the Kidd Mining and Metallurgical Divisions, the Horne smelter and the CCR refinery, as well as the recycling facilities in Canada and the United States.
Mr. Ferron first joined Falconbridge in 1981. Most recently, he was Vice-President and General Manager of the Horne smelter and the CCR refinery. He was previously General Manager of Kidd Metallurgical Division and Manager of its Copper and Zinc Operations. He also held other positions in strategic and business planning and worked at the Geco, Heath Steele, Horne and Matagami operations.
Mr. Ferron holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Laurentian University.
PETER KUKIELSKI
CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
Peter Kukielski was appointed Chief Operating Officer in May 2005. Previously, he was Senior Vice-President, Projects, and Executive Vice-President, Projects and Aluminum, with responsibility for projects, technology, Six Sigma and performance, and the Aluminum Business Unit.
His responsibilities include leadership of Falconbridge's business units and all aspects of the performance and profitability of Falconbridge's operations.
Prior to joining Falconbridge, Mr. Kukielski was Engineering and Commissioning Manager with the Antamina project in Perú. He also worked on Newmont's Batu Hijau copper and gold mining project in Indonesia and on Kennecott's copper smelter and refinery modernization in Utah.
Mr. Kukielski is a civil engineer and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Rhode Island and a Master's degree from Stanford University.
JOE LAEZZA
PRESIDENT, NICKEL
Joe Laezza was appointed President, Nickel, in September 2002. Mr. Laezza was formerly Senior Vice-President, Nickel, and is responsible for the development of future nickel opportunities.
Since joining the Falconbridge team in 1980, Mr. Laezza has held various other senior positions such as Vice-President, Marketing, Sales and Custom Materials. He was also Marketing Manager for Southern Europe, and Production Superintendent of Refinery and Casting at Kidd Creek. Prior to joining Falconbridge, Mr. Laezza held various positions within Texasgulf and the Noranda Group of Companies.
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Metallurgy from McGill University in Montréal, Québec.
DEREK G. PANNELL
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Derek G. Pannell was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Falconbridge on June 30, 2005. He had previously been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Noranda Inc. since June 1, 2002. Mr. Pannell also served as the President and Chief Operating Officer for Noranda between September 2001 and June 2002.
Mr. Pannell is a metallurgical engineer with over 35 years of experience in the mining and metals industry. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Imperial College in London, England. As Vice-President, Operations, of Compañía Minera Antamina in Perú, Mr. Pannell participated in the very successful completion of the copper-zinc mine, a 2.3 billion copper mining development in Perú which started commercial production in October 2001, four months ahead of schedule and under budget.
Mr. Pannell first joined Noranda in 1969 and, over the years, became responsible for the operations of Noranda's principal copper and zinc businesses. His senior level management experience includes Senior Vice-President, Copper Group, and President of Noranda Copper Smelting and Refining, as well as President of Brunswick Mining and Smelting.
Mr. Pannell is a Director of the Mining Association of Canada and the Chair of the Association's Towards Sustainable Mining initiative and a Board member of the International Council on Mining and Metals. He also acted as Co-Chair of the Mining Industry Training and Adjustment Council from 1996 to 1998, was a member of the Premier of New Brunswick's roundtable on the environment from 1995 to 1997, and was President of the Rouyn-Noranda CEGEP during 1991 and 1992. Mr. Pannell is also an Honourary Professor of the Universidad Nacional de Ingenéria, Lima, Perú.
FERNANDO PORCILE
PRESIDENT, SOUTH AMERICAN COPPER
Fernando Porcile was appointed President, Copper, in September 2002. Mr. Porcile joined Falconbridge in April 2002 as Senior Vice-President, Copper.
With more than 35 years of experience in the mining industry in project and operations management, Mr. Porcile was most recently Vice-President, Project Development, for BHP Billiton Base Metals and was responsible for several key projects. Prior to that he held a variety of positions with Rio Algom Limited, including President of Compañía Minera Cerro Colorado, Vice-President of Engineering and Development and Vice-President of Operations. He also worked for the Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO), a major Chilean copper producer, and for the Davy McKee Engineering and Construction Company in the United States.
His duties include managing Falconbridge's assets in South America, including the Lomas Bayas copper mining operation, the 44% interest in the Collahuasi copper mine, the Altonorte smelter, the commercial office in Santiago, Chile, and the Company's 33.75% interest in the Antamina mine in Perú.
Mr. Porcile is a mineral engineer who studied at the University of Chile before completing a Master's degree from Columbia University in the United States.
AARON W. REGENT
PRESIDENT
Aaron W. Regent was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Falconbridge in June 2002. After the completion of the merger of Noranda Inc. and Falconbridge Limited, he became President of the new Company.
Prior to this, he was Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of Noranda Inc. (2000–2002), President and Chief Executive Officer of Trilon Securities Corporation (1996–2000) and Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of Brookfield Asset Management Corporation (1992–1996).
Mr. Regent has been a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario since 1991 and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario.
Mr. Regent is the Chairman of the Nickel Development Institute and a member of the Board of Directors of Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi S.C.M. (Chile), the C.D. Howe Institute, the National Ballet of Canada and The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation.
ROBERT SIPPEL
PRESIDENT, ZINC AND MAGNESIUM
Robert Sippel was appointed President, Zinc, in August 2003. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Sippel was President, Magnesium, and previously was Senior Vice-President, Magnesium and Recycling.
Throughout the past 25 years, Mr. Sippel has demonstrated sales and management experience with Falconbridge, with a major portion of his career spent spearheading the creation and growth of Falconbridge's international recycling business. Since 1977, he has held several senior commercial and operational positions in Canada and England with Noranda. In 1997, he was appointed Senior Vice-President, Recycling.
Mr. Sippel holds a Bachelor of Science degree, with honours in chemistry, from the Faculty of Applied Chemistry at the University of Waterloo.
