Falconbridge Limited conducts research and development to support our long-term strategic goals, to provide support to our operations around the world, and to ensure our future competitiveness by developing world-class technical personnel.

Research activities are conducted primarily at our metallurgical technology facilities in Sudbury, Ontario; at our Nikkelverk refinery in Kristiansand, Norway; at the Kidd Metallurgical Division in Timmins, Ontario; and at Falcondo in the Dominican Republic. Research at these facilities is undertaken to provide mineral analyses, to develop new methods for treating ores and custom feeds, to improve nickel, copper, cobalt and zinc products, and to advance environmentally sensitive production technologies.

Technologies and expertise developed and used at Falconbridge have been used around the world. For instance, the Kidd copper refining process has been made available to many copper refineries worldwide. The process, which was developed at the Kidd Metallurgical Division, includes technology transfer of our high-quality and efficient refining know-how, stainless steel cathodes, copper cathode preparation process and after-market service.
