Zinc
Our Zinc growth initiatives in Australia and Canada span exploration to feasibility

Perseverance, Québec, Canada
Stage: Feasibility

Falconbridge owns a 90% interest in the Perseverance property with joint-venture partner Société de Développement de la Baie James. Located in northwestern Québec, the ore deposit comprises three high-grade zinc/copper lenses situated 6 kilometres from our existing Matagami concentrator. Measured and indicated resources are 5.1 million tonnes grading 15.8% zinc, 1.24% copper, 29 grade per tonne silver and 0.38 grade per tonne of gold. The Company exploration team was honoured in 2001 with the PDAC Bill Dennis Prospector of the Year Award for the discovery of the deposit. In 2004, Falconbridge updated a feasibility study for the development of the project. Development of the mine and commercial production of zinc concentrate can be completed in two years by utilizing the existing Matagami camp infrastructure. The mine could produce over 75,000 tonnes of zinc-in-concentrate for six or more years with a very attractive internal rate of return. As zinc market fundamentals continue to improve, the timing of this project will be reviewed.

Advanced studies have concluded there is potential for annual production of 125,000 tonnes of zinc-in-concentrate and 40,000 tonnes of lead-in-concentrate for more than 10 years.

Lennard Shelf, Western Australia, Australia
Stage: Exploration
Under an agreement with Teck Cominco, Falconbridge can earn a 50% interest in the Lennard Shelf mineral properties, operations and infrastructure.
