Montcalm
The mine is a nickel-copper producer

The Montcalm mine is a nickel-copper property located 70 kilometres northwest of Timmins, Ontario, Canada.

Location Map

Geology
The Montcalm deposit is located on the northern tip of the large (85 square kilometre) arc-shaped Montcalm Gabbro Complex (MGC), which is within the west margin of the Abitibi Subprovince along the eastern border of the Kapuskasing Structural Zone.

Detailed Geology

Operations
The mine reached its designed production capacity of 750,000 tonnes annually during the fourth quarter of 2004. This included conversion of a redundant mill line at the Kidd concentrator to handle the Montcalm ores. Two concentrates are produced – a copper concentrate which is treated at the Kidd Metallurgical complex and a nickel concentrate which is transported to the Sudbury smelter for processing into nickel matte.

During 2004, the Montcalm mine produced 214,392 tonnes of ore grading 1.32% nickel and 0.69% copper. The initial 73,148 tonnes of ore produced were hauled to the Strathcona concentrator in Sudbury while construction at the Kidd concentrator was taking place.

Montcalm is expected to contribute up to 9,000 tonnes annually to refined nickel output.

Reserves
  • Proven: 3.2 million tonnes grading 1.56% nickel and 0.75% copper
  • Probable: 1.7 million tonnes grading 1.44% nickel and 0.70% copper
