Rolleston Thermal Coal Project (100% MIM)

MIM is to proceed with the development of an eight million tonne per annum thermal coal mine at Rolleston in Queensland.

Rolleston is located in the south-west of the Bowen Basin, 16 kilometres west of the town of Rolleston and 275 kilometres due west of the established coal port of Gladstone.

MIM's Rolleston coal tenements comprise an estimated 600 million tonnes of coal resources. Rolleston is a low ash coal (7.5% in combustion trials) with an energy rating of 5730 kcal/kg on a net as received basis. It has moderate sulphur levels and produces low NOx emissions upon combustion.

The capital cost of the mine is estimated to be $175 million for the initial 6 mtpa development with a further $75 million when the second dragline and associated mining equipment are introduced.

Work on long lead items will begin immediately, with the major development work to commence once the mining lease and other outstanding regulatory approvals are granted over the coming months.

The mine development includes the construction of a heavy rail line by QR which will link the Rolleston Mine to the central Queensland line to Gladstone.

Regional economic benefits

The Rolleston mine would bring significant economic benefits to Australia, Queensland and the region.

  • Directly, the mine will create considerable direct employment, with the workforce peaking at around 200 people during construction and the continuing workforce required to operate the mine numbering over 100.
  • Indirectly, the mine will generate additional jobs in the region as well as increased consumer spending.
  • The mine will broaden economic activity in the Bauhinia Shire which is a predominantly farm-based and has not benefited by the growth created by mining in some neighbouring shires.
  • Proposed heavy haul rail line link to Rolleston with the central Queensland line to Gladstone will be available for grain and other haulage, facilitating further development of agriculture in the Rolleston region and other coal resources along the railway line.
  • The town of Rolleston and the southern end of the Bauhinia Shire in which it is located will benefit from a more secure electricity supply via a 132kV power line into the region.
  • The communities of Rolleston and Springsure in particular will benefit from the Rolleston Coal Project in the long term.
  • MIM has committed to a $1.8 million Community Funding Agreement which will bring opportunities for development to the local Bauhinia Shire by providing funds for services and infrastructure. It will also contribute to community life by providing funds for local charities and groups. An announcement giving details of the Community Funding Agreement is available for Download [Acrobat - 46Kb].
