Want to know more about our graduate and vacation work programmes? The MIM group employs around 8,000 people worldwide at its operations in Australia, Argentina, Mexico and the United Kingdom. We are pursuing a strategy of improving shareholder value through high operational performance and growth. Good leadership, the development of people, efficient work practices and practical application of technology are vital aspects of this strategy.
Our Commitment to People
MIM continually strives to treat its employees honestly, fairly and with respect. We aim to provide: Across the group, development programmes designed to further improve the leadership and technical performance of our people are in place. These programmes aim to create and maintain an organisation where everybody has the opportunity to progress and develop to their full potential. Our senior managers started their careers as miners, mechanics, process operators or graduates. There is no limit to how far the right capabilities, people skills and hard work can take you in MIM. MIM's reputation for employee development is a very important aspect of our recruitment and selection process. We appoint from outside the company only when absolutely certain no internal candidates are suitable and interested.
The aim of MIM's Graduate Employment Programme is to provide graduates with the technical and people skills development, which will allow them make an independent contribution to the company in the shortest possible time. We believe this is achieved most effectively by assigning graduates to work on real problems, in real situations. Managers plan and monitor individual development against key competencies and ensure exposure to a range of on-the-job experiences necessary to achieve the programme objectives. This development may include spending time with production work crews, structured training, technical projects and day-to-day involvement in operations or functional activities. Graduates undertake two years of development within the company before appointment to a permanent role. After this appointment, ongoing employee development is a key accountability for managers although all employees are expected to take some responsibility for their own career direction and development. People who complete our Graduate Programme may pursue technical and/or managerial career paths. We have a strong track record of promoting and developing our own staff and only undertake external recruitment when necessary. MIM supports and encourages employees to pursue career opportunities at other group operations, in Australia and overseas, as suitable vacancies or projects arise. Each year, MIM employs graduates in the following disciplines:
Our graduates need energy, determination and excellent interpersonal skills to be our technical and managerial leaders of the future. We look for people who are practical; can build effective relationships and work well in teams; who have high levels of enthusiasm, initiative and resourcefulness and who can make an independent contribution to our business. The ability to 'have a go' and apply knowledge to practical problems in the workplace are important selection criteria as is relevant work experience undertaken during university courses. Most of MIM's operations are in regional locations, so it is also essential that graduates can enjoy and make the most of life in communities away from capital cities. MIM prefers to receive all applications on-line. Our website contains comprehensive information about our products and operations, exploration and development and our safety, environmental and financial performance. We expect graduates to have a good understanding of MIM and what we do before they apply, so browsing our website is an important step in preparing your application. Applications for our Graduate Programme will be accepted from 3 March to 28 April 2003. We conduct graduate interviews at Universities around Australia during May, and expect to make first-round offers before final exams in first semester.
Vacation work is an important component of MIM's Graduate Recruitment and Development programme. Our vacation students gain valuable hands-on experience in our operations and come into contact with employees from all sorts of backgrounds and all levels of experience. The aim of our vacation work programme is to give students a realistic look at what it is like working in our operations and to allow them to gain broad experience in operational roles. This gives us an opportunity to assess their potential for future roles with MIM and gives you the chance to assess MIM as a potential employer. Placements are usually for a period of 12 weeks, from the beginning of December to the end of February. This allows students to get their teeth into the work and spend time with other employees, really getting to know what they do on a day-to-day basis. Vacation students are paid competitively at a fixed rate, which is based on the graduate scale of salaries. Students are also eligible for roster and site allowances as appropriate. MIM pays the costs associated with travel to and from the operations, and will provide subsidised accommodation for the duration of the project where necessary. Specific conditions, including actual salary, start and finish dates are discussed during the interview process and detailed in the formal offer of employment. A project definition sheet, outlining the work to be carried out and the outcomes expected, is also provided to students before they begin their employment. Each year, up to 75 placements are available for students who are studying appropriate disciplines. These include:
Students must have completed at least two years of study before commencing their placement. We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic students with a genuine desire to work in the mining industry after they graduate. To get the most out of your placement, you will need to enjoy working with people and be able to apply your knowledge in a practical way to real work situations. Almost all our student placements are in remote or regional locations, so you must also enjoy living outside the capital cities. And, as most opportunities occur over summer, you must be prepared for the north Queensland and Northern Territory's tropical or outback heat! MIM prefers to receive all applications on-line. This helps us to communicate with students more effectively and reduces the time taken to handle your applications. Our website contains comprehensive information about our products and operations, exploration and development and our safety, environmental and financial performance. We expect you to have a good understanding of MIM and what we do before you apply, so browsing our website is an important step in preparing your application. Applications for our Vacation Programme will be accepted from 14 July to 29 August 2003. We conduct interviews on campus during September and October for our vacation programme, and expect to make offers before end-of-year exams. Luke Krois Originally from Melbourne, Luke completed his engineering degree at RMIT University in 2000. During his studies Luke worked as a Mine Geologist Vacation Student over the 1999/2000 summer at MIM's George Fisher mine where he gained experience in underground mapping, logging, digitising and various project work. Luke was selected for the MIM graduate program in May 2000 and started work as a Graduate Mine Geologist with the Enterprise mine in January 2001. As a Graduate Geologist, Luke has worked at both Mount Isa's copper mines (X41 and Enterprise), gaining experience in mapping, logging and interpretation, near-mine exploration and orebody delineation drilling (supervision and design), mine planning and grade control. Luke spent four months with MIM's Mount Isa Copper Study where he was seconded to work with a large team of contractors and MIM employees in re-modelling the copper geological model, including data validation, coordinating structural and lithological interpretations, orebody modelling and reporting. "Working for MIM is both a challenging and rewarding experience. My role as a Graduate Geologist involves relative autonomy and self-management, allowing me to benefit from the added experience and responsibility that comes with a work ethic of passion, integrity and commitment. I am supported by a large team of mine planners and have profited from this vast knowledge and experience base. I believe that I am well placed to continue a career of responsibility and leadership." Matt Magee Matt completed secondary school in Brisbane in 1996, before commencing his study of Minerals Process Engineering at the University of Queensland in 1997. During university holidays, Matt worked at MIM's Ernest Henry mine in north-west Queensland and Newcrest's Cadia Hill Gold Mine in New South Wales. He also worked for short periods on other Queensland sites such as Burton Coal mine and Boyne Smelters. After graduating from university in 2000, Matt joined the MIM Graduate Program as a Graduate Metallurgist. In this role, he worked in the lead-zinc concentrator, zinc filter plant, copper concentrator, copper smelter and lead smelter. This work involved training with production crews, as well as extensive project work including improving the throughput of the zinc filter plant, performing concentrator reagent trials, evaluating Isamill performance, the commissioning of a new converter control system, identifying the influence of metallurgical coke properties on blast furnace operation, and sampling molten metal during lead drossing. Matt was also able to actively develop his leadership potential by applying skills learnt while participating in the MIM Leadership Development Program. Presently, Matt is working as the Acting Process Metallurgist at the copper concentrator. "My graduate program with MIM provided an outstanding opportunity to develop core skills in concentrator, smelter and leadership environments. This experience was enhanced by the dedicated support that was provided by the experienced and diverse metallurgical group working on site, combined with ready access to the resources required to perform tasks effectively. The experience that I have gained working in Mount Isa cannot be attained at graduate level anywhere else in Australia. Further, I believe that I am now in a position to make a significant and lasting contribution to MIM."
